Casinos

The casino has been a part of the American landscape since the 1930s when Las Vegas was born in the middle of the Nevada desert. Since that time, casinos have never waned in popularity. The traditionally stodgy and hardened exterior of the casino personality has experienced quite a facelift in recent years, while their business interests have broadened.

The Biggest Casino

It is not in Las Vegas. Surprisingly, the biggest casino, as far as square footage goes, is in Connecticut and is owned by the Mashantucket-Pequot Indian Tribe. The Foxwoods Resort and Casino is one of the most successful tribal casinos in the United States and one of the most lucrative.

The resort covers more than four million square feet of which more than 300,000 square feet is casino floor space. Foxwoods was opened in 1992 and has become one of New England’s foremost attractions. In terms of revenue, the casino rakes in close to $1 billion annually. This figure accounts for nearly half of all Indian gaming revenues in the United States.

The Most Expensive Casino

Currently, the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas enjoys the status of most expensive construction. The Bellagio opened in 1998 replete with the most luxurious accommodations, Italian marble throughout, botanical gardens, fountains choreographed to operatic pieces, and a respected art gallery. The Bellagio cost a mere $1.5 billion to construct. In contrast, the soon-to-open Wynn Las Vegas Resort will double the bottom line of the Bellagio construction.

Oxygenation Myth

There are a formidable number of sources that continue to perpetuate the urban myth that casinos vent increasing levels of oxygen into their gaming areas as the day wears on to keep gamblers bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

Casinos Control Slot Machines

People have all sorts of notions about the slot machines: how they work, whether they work properly, and who controls them. Some people have believed that the casinos manually determine when a slot machine should pay out to a player, that there is someone watching the slot floor either via video or two-way mirrors.

“Loose” Slots

This supposed myth might be factual, but the jury is still out. “Loose” slots are those that casinos strategically place in key areas around the casino. Loose slots are designed to pay out more frequently, thereby attracting slots players to that general area.
