Lotteries

Lotteries are perhaps the most familiar and accepted forms of gambling in American culture today.

Lottery History

Lotteries have been used in one form or another throughout history. Early American settlers used lotteries to raise money for their community infrastructures. Lotteries were again used during both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War to help defray the cost of outfitting armies.

Modern lotteries became vogue once more in 1964, when New Hampshire instituted the first legal state lottery. This was intended to serve as a means of voluntary taxation in a state that did not charge its citizens state taxes. Since 1964, most states, save for a handful, have established multiple forms of lottery games.

How Revenues Are Used

The rationale behind most state lotteries is that the funds are necessary to provide adequate public education systems. Many states also claim to add funding to stressed out transportation or healthcare budgets, and a responsible few still provide funds for problem gambling programs.

However, many anti-lottery organizations argue that revenues are being used less and less for education and are instead fleecing citizens to full the pockets of politicians and private companies who own the actual games.

It is estimated that all state lotteries combined earn nearly $50 billion annually. That number is climbing.

Marketing Lottery Games

States regularly spend millions on advertisement for their various lottery games. Many sources argue that they spend more money on advertising the games with the worst odds and routinely target the poorer segment of society. Also, lucrative incentive programs are in place for retailers who market point-of-sale lottery games and for those who sell winning tickets.

You Can Win

Perhaps the biggest myth perpetuated by lotteries is that “I” can win. Yes, while someone has to win, millions more are led to believe that they can win, too. Lotteries have the worst odds of nearly any other gambling game in the world.

Lucky Numbers

People play based on lucky numbers everyday. They play birthdays, wedding, and anniversary dates. They play their numerology numbers. The myth is perpetuated that sometime their number will come up, and when it does they better hold the ticket. In fact, the big jackpot lottery games are so random that the chance for someone’s array of hand-picked numbers actually winning would be considered a miracle.
