Slot Machines
Since their invention in the 1880s, slot machines have been one of the most popular casino gambling pursuits. Many sources profess to be able to teach winning slot strategies, while the casino world claims that the games are completely random.
History
The original slot machine was an invention of Charles Fey’s in the late 19th century. Fey’s first machine debuted in San Francisco and was called the “Liberty Bell.” During the early 20th century, slot machine fever took over various parts of the country. These first-generation machines were made out of cast iron and wood with three reels that spun. They were increasingly decorated in brighter and more daring detail to attract the most attention. Not much has changed.
Straight Line vs. Multi-Line Slots
A “straight line” slot pays along one row of reels. Reels typically number from the basic three to six. Most machines in recent years are electronic, versus their mechanical forebears. In the last few years, casinos have begun adding “multi-line” slot machines to their cadre of offerings. When various configurations of symbols line up across multiple lines, the machine pays. Typically, most experts will advise slot players to stick to the straight line slots.
Straight Slots vs. Progressive Slots
A “straight” slot pays up front what it advertises the game will pay for a winning spin. “Progressive” slots add up a cumulative jackpot. Bigger jackpots seem more lucrative, and they are if they pay, but payouts are infrequent. General advice is to stay away from progressive slot machines, especially if you are on a budget.
Money Management Strategy
The best “strategy” most experts advise slot players take is to be wise with their money. Set a limit, play a number of slots and if you are losing, leave with what you have left. Use casino cards when possible. Casino cards get you rewards. Do not use the credit meters.
Tricking the Slots
Many supposed slot gurus portend to be able to beat the slot odds. The fact is that slot results are generated by random number generators. Machines now have much more reliable random number generators since most have become electronic. However, many sources recommend slightly better odds for those who play multi-coin, straight line machines with minimal reels. |
